The customer is Mecklenberg County. The roof of Huntersville public library is about 10 years old and has had a lot of problems from the time of new construction. The construction is so poor that band aids are not working. This roof is a concave convex construction, and most of the panels available to us have to be installed in two pieces, thus creating a seam, and that is where the problems lie. A viable long term solution is needed and it must be a solution that will also take into consideration the tax payers’ money.
One of the options we considered was tearing off the roof and putting on a single ply roof membrane, but unfortunately that would not allow us to retain the current architectural aesthetic appeal.
We decided to involve specialists from a leading manufacturer of high-performance roofing and building envelope solutions who use a unique process in dealing with this type of roof.
To eliminate the problems due to the seam, they will use a specialty application to make a curved radius panel in one piece instead of two.
This public library was to be closed for only 3 weeks and this project had to be completed during the summer to accomodate students. In total the Huntersville Library project had a duration of 3 weeks, working nights and weekends, with much of the project management time done prior to starting.
The roofing manufacturer took care of all the energy savings, improvements and the maintenance free application. The roof should last 20-50 years.
